CREIGHTON MICHAEL

“Over the last four decades, my studio practice has centered on investigating the diverse facets of drawing from its material composition, process and critical relationship with patterns to associations with marking systems such as musical notation, short hand and calligraphy. Through a layered process of interwoven analog and digital techniques, the resulting discoveries have encouraged exploration into the recurrent spaces separating gesture and language, and the perpetual dialogue between mark and pattern.”

An alumnus of the University of Tennessee, Creighton Michael received his M.A. in art history from Vanderbilt University and a M.F.A. in painting and multimedia from Washington University in St. Louis. He is a recipient of a Pollack Krasner Foundation grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in sculpture and a Golden Foundation for the Arts award in painting. His work is in public and private collections including the National Gallery of Art and The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Modern Art (Special Collections), Whitney Museum (Frances Mulhall Achilles Library Collection) and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Brooklyn Museum, High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia; Denver Art Museum, Mint Museums of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina; and the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York.
